1zu1 Prototypes continues to grow unabated in its twentieth year of existence.
For years, 1zu1 Prototypes has been specifically recruiting female trainees for its technical professions. And this year we’ve been successful once again.
1zu1 Prototypes has been voted the best family business in Vorarlberg by the Austrian daily newspaper “Wirtschaftsblatt”. The owner-managed high-tech company is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Its workforce has grown from 2 to 150 employees since its foundation.
1zu1 turns 20 this year amid continuing strong demand – reason enough for everyone involved to be happy! After a very successful fiscal year 2015, the company’s growth will continue unabated in 2016 – in terms of employees, systems and sales. For this reason, 1zu1 is continuing to invest in new equipment and technologies.
We are delighted to be able to offer a brand new service: 1zu1 now has two new injection-molding machines for products in ISO Class 8 cleanroom quality, which are at our customers’ disposal. This opens up a completely new chapter for sterile prototypes and small series.
1zu1 is the first company in Austria to have its quality management certified in accordance with the new ISO 9001:2015 standard via an audit by DEKRA. The audit enables us to meet the increasingly challenging requirements of certain customers and ensure the quality of our future growth and internationalization.
Six years ago, the world-famous Austrian company Swarovski added elegant stationery to its product range. To test the international response to a new ballpoint pen collection, 1zu1 Prototypes was commissioned to produce ballpoint pen models in six different designs.
The Dornbirn-based high-tech company 1zu1 Prototypes can now manufacture injection-molded prototypes and small series in cleanroom quality. The company has invested almost one million euros in this area in recent months.

Rapid prototyping, 3D printing and additive manufacturing (AM) are on everyone’s lips and in constant flux. In the past, rapid prototyping meant the production of models and prototypes. Today, we tend to talk about 3D printing and AM, which together encompass a number of production processes for prototypes, tools or finished parts. For small batches, individual pieces or complex shapes, 3D-printing processes have become hard to beat.
“Our search for apprentices was very successful this year,” says Managing Director Hannes Hämmerle. “However, it was evident that there are many other good employers in the Dornbirn area who are also involved in apprentice training”.
This summer, the “Ländle Talente Compilation” will once again present young Vorarlberg-based musicians (bands, soloists, DJs) on three Saturday evenings in August – live from the market square in Dornbirn.
The health of his employees is a top priority for Hannes Hämmerle. Nevertheless (or exactly because of this), the entrepreneur is doing very well with his company 1zu1 Prototypes.

During World Cup races, luge athletes hurtle down the ice track at speeds of up to 130 km/h. This season, the aim was to make the Austrian team even faster thanks to completely redesigned sleds. On February 2, 2015 this goal was achieved – Wolfgang Kindl from Austria’s Tyrol region took first place in the men's single-seater race at the World Cup in Lillehammer. The basis for this newly developed sports equipment was provided by 1zu1 Prototypes.
Seven new apprentices – trainees account for more than 20 percent of the workforce
Heat-resistant, flame-retardant and shatter-proof plastics – and now also with light-diffusing properties
Wolfgang Humml and Hannes Hämmerle have received the Hans Huber Recognition Award for their development of young professionals.
1zu1 Rapid Manufacturing – Jig and fixture construction
Good news from our rapid manufacturing and 3D printing department: No matter what kind of “little helper” you need for production, we can make it for you. Our outstanding expertise in jig and fixture construction means we can offer you three clear advantages: fast production of plastic fixtures within a few days, sensationally low costs compared to in-house production, and a high degree of design freedom.
1zu1 – Customs clearance process for Switzerland and Liechtenstein
We are back with news from the world of officialdom: According to the Austrian tax office we are required to adjust our delivery and customs clearance process for Switzerland and Liechtenstein with immediate effect. Indeed, prototype manufacturing services are now classified as “normal trade”, which makes export customs clearance compulsory.
The inaugural Long Night of Research (Lange Nacht der Forschung) proved a great success for 1zu1 Prototypes. Almost 2,000 people with an interest in the Dornbirn-based company’s technology visited its training workshop – and marveled at various high-tech processes including 3D printing. However, the star of the evening was definitely Roboy.
On April 4, 2014 from 5 pm to 11 pm, Vorarlberg’s innovative centers will open their doors to give visitors some exciting insights into their work as part of the Long Night of Research (LNF). Numerous experiments and interesting demonstrations await you during an evening of shared fascination and discovery.
Investments to reach two million euros by the end of 2014
Andy Holzer, the internationally renowned blind mountaineer, is referring to himself when he says that it’s fascinating what can be achieved from humble beginnings. In our interview he explains why he climbs mountains, describes his past experiences and planned expeditions – and tells us what any of this has to do with 1zu1 Prototypes.
